Wheels n' Heels Product Logo

The first heavy load-bearing grating that is wheelchair and high-heel-friendly

Wheels n’ Heels® is the first grating product to meet the vehicular traffic loading requirements of the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and the pedestrian comfort requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). In addition, Wheels n’ Heels® weighs less than other heavy-duty bar grating and is manufactured from our Strong Series galvanized carbon steel or Strong Series stainless steel for maximum strength and durability.

Phase 2

High Line Park

New York City, NY

In order to create a more connected, healthy community, we partnered with non-profits in New York City to enhance High Line Park—Manhattan’s elevated rail line-turned greenway. In order to fulfill the vision for this unique elevated park, our team crafted heavy-duty stainless steel grating that created a “see-through” look while remaining ADA Compliant and high-heel friendly. By making slight alterations to our products, we created a grating strong enough to support maintenance vehicles while achieving 68% transparency underfoot to allow park visitors to view plants and park features below.

Consolidated Edison

Electric Vault Gratings

New York City, NY

New York City’s Times Square is one of the busiest places on earth. And when Con-Edison needed a grating solution there was no shortage of challenges. We needed a grating product that gave line crews easy access to underground power lines while providing proper transformer ventilation and met AASHTO H20 requirements for truck loads and ADA requirements for pedestrians. Our team worked diligently to find a reliable solution that addressed each challenge ultimately delivering our Wheels n’ Heels® Metro® with ALGRIP® surface treatment as an exceptional long-term solution.

COLUMBIA

UNIVERSITY

New York City, NY

When Columbia University needed to replace grating along the college walk on campus, we stepped in to replace their light-duty steel welded grating with our ADA-compliant Wheels n’ Heels® Metro® grating—an aesthetically pleasing grate that is high-heel friendly and designed to withstand AASHTO H20 loading.

For ADA compliance, we recommend using OnGrip® spray traction surface or ALGRIP® slip-resistant surface in conjunction with Wheels N’ Heels® close mesh grating.

ALGRIP® is a patented CNC laser process that welds thousands of rugged, custom alloy laser deposits to base metal for slip resistance in all directions. In addition, ALGRIP® traction features meet or exceed OSHA and ADA requirements for slip resistance in wet or dry conditions.

Using thermal metal spray technology, OnGrip® metal-grip surfaces bond with carbon steel, stainless steel or aluminum surfaces for enhanced traction. Furthermore, OnGrip® meets or exceeds ADA requirements for slip resistance and is commonly used in slippery environments as well as on metal plates, stair treads and metal bar grating.

Make your project pedestrian-friendly and vehicle safe with our family of Grater Access® products. We offer a full suite of grating that conforms to the spacing requirements of the ADA Accessibility Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities and are offered in both aluminum and steel. In addition, we offer a variety of spacing options so you can have the right open area, water drainage, or airflow requirements you need while remaining accessible to pedestrians, wheelchairs, strollers, bicycles or high heels.
